 Techne was at once an independent company but it was bought over by Barloworld Scientific Ltd and has become a range of branded products produced by this company. It was originally founded in 1948 by Norman de Bruyne to produce laboratory equipment such as thermal cyclers, hybridisation ovens, waterbaths, calibrators, and dri-block heaters. In 1971 the company changed hands when de Bruyne placed the company holdings into a family trust which later sold the firm, the company changed hands many times after this until the present day under Barloworld Scientific.
